Here are some of my favorite shots that he has taken of students of mine:
Sports Related Injury Helps Me Grow as a Teacher
As a martial arts school owner, this was obviously a devastating blow not only to how I would teach class, but also how I would need to overcome this as a mental hurdle. Teaching around 40+ hours, as well as enjoying trips to the gym and going for runs each week, put me in an athletic mindset. I was also elated prior to the injury, as I was given a huge compliment. Two members of the United States National Taekwondo team told me that I should try out for the team... as they felt I would be a good representative of the country.
For over a month, I was sidelined from operating my business, both in the office and on the mat. As the head instructor at my martial arts school, this was a scary process to experience. I am eternally glad, however, for the assistance that my mother and advanced students gave me during this time.
Seven months down the road, my knee is stable, for the most part. I still participate in rehab exercises on a daily basis, but I can see the slow improvement. Since most of my teaching now consists of very light demonstrations and more speaking instead of showing, I have grown exponentially in teaching Taekwondo, Hap Ki Do, and Tang Soo Do. It has also helped me grow as a leader.
I am able to sit back and examine each and every one of my students, young and old, much better than before the injury. More on the sidelines at the moment, it is easier not only to pinpoint weaknesses and strengths, but to correct or appreciate them moreso with a commanding voice and presence.
My slowed-down physicality has also assisted with my lesson plans. The class ideas that I have come up with, be it sparring technique, traditional forms practice, self defense, boot-camp conditioning exercises, or even referee leadership skills, are much more regimented and solid than prior to my injury.
As far as handling office duties, I am also more prompt and focused. I have a set schedule that I adhere to, making sure that each and every responsibility is taken care of. It is interesting to note that my school has more white belts currently than in recent memory. I find it intriguing, because even though I may be sidelined due to an injury, new students keep signing up. I am very happy with New Edge Martial Arts at the moment.
My point in the matter is this- even though I have been weakened physically, I called upon my other skills to assist, as opposed to giving up. It is too easy to just decide to quit when the going gets rough. It takes character to overcome obstacles and triumph. I believe that everyone has that ability to fight and succeed, no matter what hardships come before them. I hope that anyone who suffers from an injury, illness, or anything else for that matter realizes that they are stronger than what harms them. Everyone has worth.
God Bless!

Taekwondo
Integrity: Personal pride, honor, morality, wholeness.
Perseverence: Continuing to try to achieve a goal in spite of obstacles, persistence.
Self-Control: Being responsible for one's own actions and behavior.
Indomitable Spirit: Strength of mind and soul.
The above listed are the Tenets of Taekwondo, as taken from 'Dong Yang Moo Sool Do Textbook' by Sun Hwan Chung.
It is my desire and lifelong practice to live as close to these principles as possible. Taekwondo, as an art, strengthens my spirit. Meshing well with my faith in God, practicing the art of Taekwondo allows me to not only see my flaws, but to continually work on them.

Happy Holidays and update
I wanted to take this time to wish every single one of you a very happy holiday season. God Bless you and yours during this time meant for peace, love, and joy! :)
A little update on me... on the 7th of November, I suffered a knee injury. My ACL and MCL were completely torn, and I will be having surgery on December 2nd. The recovery will take awhile, obviously, but I have the support of each and every one of my friends and family members to get me through it. I also am blessed to have so many wonderful adult and youth black belts at New Edge Martial Arts, that have been assisting with classes during my injury. It is really nice to know that when times are rough, kindness sees everything through.

Katherine Elizabeth New
Katherine (Kaye, Kitty, Katia) was many things throughout her long life not only to me, but everyone she touched in some way. Loving, selfless, sharp as a tac, and humorous to no end... a true joy to spend time with. A daughter, sister, mother, game show enthusiast, piano player, cook, friend, and even a World War II vet. To me, she was a best friend and most of all, my grandma. Thank you for the memories and legacy- have fun with Jesus. ♥
Teen Martial Arts classes at New Edge Martial Arts
The Teen class is geared towards the energy level of that age group and will strive to help create and strengthen friendships. It will build in each teen an increased appreciation for martial arts and fitness in general.
Yoga
I just experienced my first ever Yoga class. It was an amazing workout and did wonders for handling the past couple of weeks worth of stress, as my grandmother recently passed away. I look forward to countless more Yoga sessions with Tim Clark, and highly recommend it to anyone with even the slightest bit of interest.

Stace is a class act, and a great photographer. I recommend him to any martial artist. :)
New Belts for my students :)
I held two tests for some of my students- young and old, beginner and more advanced. The first test was full of so much positive energy from both pupils and parents alike. It is so nice to see all of the positive reinforcement that moms, dads, and family members can bring at times when seeing their loved ones perform.
The second test had the same amount of energy, but with a different feeling. Several of my adult students participated... all of whom were support to eachother. I was also happy to see that three of my other adult students came to watch and cheer on their friends. :) I love the fact that New Edge is helping create friendships... such a good sign. Also of note, the latter test saw a group of nine blue belts become promoted to brown. This was honestly the biggest group of one belt color (aside from black,) that I have ever seen test in my 19 years of martial arts. Way to go, guys and gals ;)

Senior Grand Master James Sun Hwan Chung
He holds several titles of importance in the martial arts community. He is a level 1 referee for the World Tae Kwon Do Federation, which is the branch that oversees Tae Kwon Do at the Olympics. He is also an advisor to the President of the Kukkiwon- the governing body to WTF Tae Kwon Do. Just one month ago, he was an honorary chairman for the 8th Triennial World Hap Ki Do Championships, which is similar in circumstance to any event that he attends. He also has strong connections as far as celebrities in the martial arts world are concerned. From Jason David Frank of Power Rangers fame to Chuck Norris, Senior Grand Master James Sun Hwan Chung is respected amongst that community.
Grand Master Chung and his wife, Senior Master Teresa, have been a strong foundation in my martial arts career for many years... whether directly or indirectly. My students that make it up to black belt rank are promoted at the I.A.M.A. headquarters in Kalamazoo under Grand Master Chung four times per year. They also attend his annual Michigan Cup Championship, which takes place every year in late September (this year it is on September 25th.) Several times per year, I am honored to visit Kalamazoo on my own time for training, relaxation, and comradery between my martial arts peers. Each visit, I am welcomed with open arms by the Chungs as if I am one of their sons... being allowed to stay at their house, study with them, and join them for the frequent meal. About three summers ago, I had the priveledge of travelling to South Korea with Grand Master Chung for around three weeks. It was there that my relationship with him as a student began to expand, as he showed me so much about the culture of Korea and Tae Kwon Do. I was allowed to visit the Kukkiwon, meet Korean Olympic medalists and coaches, experience the people and food of that region, and also teach and take classes in various Korean martial arts. That experience boosted my drive and morale as a martial arts school owner, which I have shared with my mother and students ever since. Senior Grand Master James Sun Hwan Chung has been so much to me in my life. A teacher and mentor, a business advisor, an example, and a father figure.

Summer Martial Arts Update
Just thought I'd share with you what is going on for the summer. As far as Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do are concerned, New Edge Martial Arts has already hosted an in-house sparring tournament for youth students. The sparring tournament was held last Saturday, July 17th. 24 students competed, which is a great turnout for the summer. It was a very fun experience, and a great way for them to stay focused for when the bigger competitions arrive in the fall season.
On Saturday, August 14th there will be an in-house forms tournament for students aged 5-14- each being broken up into respective divisions, of course. Home events are always fun to host. :)
Last Monday five adult students participated in the 2nd Hap Ki Do test ever at New Edge Martial Arts. It was a near-flawless performance on their part- amazing to witness. Several other adults who could not make that date due to personal circumstances will be testing soon at a makeup.
Speaking of Hap Ki Do, the 8th Triennial World Hap Ki Do Championship will be taking place in early August in Battle Creek, MI. I am considering going to either witness or POSSIBLE participate... as this is the first time the event has not been in South Korea. Sweet! :)
Lastly- does anyone know where one could take lessons in the Korean language in the Detroit area?
Until Next Time,
Master Kevin :)

Tae Kwon Do Tournament and Master Kevin to test for 5th Dan...
Just stopping by to share a few things going on in my martial arts world.
1. I recently held my first Hap Ki Do test for students. It was a great change of pace from the normal exams that I hold- as it comprised mainly of partner drills, armbars, and takedowns. All passed and either earned their yellow or purple belts... depending on experience.
2. Last Friday I had around 40 students test in both Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do, depending on age. Both children and adult tests were full of talent and awesomeness. :) There will also be an exam next week at New Edge Martial Arts.
3. Both Master Cindie and I are very busy preparing for our first tournament on May 8th. We are holding it at a gym in a local church... one of our adult black belts owns and operates a martial arts school there. Several other schools will be in attendance, with competitors participating in both forms and sparring events.
4. Last but not least, June 12th marks the date in which I will test for my 5th Degree Black Belt in both Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do... almost 19 years in the making! I am pretty excited about this- and hope to find time in my busy schedule to prepare myself ;) haha. I also have several students testing for their black belts- it will be a great group event!

Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do belt testing- 3/13/10
Also- I recently started holding black belt classes for my junior students twice a month on Saturdays. The feedback was very positive for the first three sample sessions... so I decided to make it permanent. The last class had 14 young athletes in attendance- very amazing to see how the school is growing.
Lastly... I am running my first race tomorrow. The corktown 5k in Downtown Detroit for St. Patrick's Day! Should be a lot of fun.

Also, thank you for everyone who helped make my Tae Kwon Do Forms DVDs one of the top selling in its category for the month of December on Amazon.com . :)

Looking back on martial arts and motivation...
As a kid I never really accepted the habits that my mom or dad tried to place on me as far as exercise was concerned. I always had to be prompted to go outside and play--- be it basketball, running around, riding my bike--- you name it. My parents even went so far as to purchase a bowflex for the family, which I used MAYBE a good 25 times in my early-mid teens. I just wasn't motivated.
On top of that, I displayed some pretty bad eating rituals- craving McDonalds or some type of fast food several times a week. I was one of the heavy kids, and shied away from just about every team sport (from a combination of being picked last for competitions to me just not caring much about the sport.) This, among other things, led to mild depression in my youth and just general unhappiness.
A positive constant for me, though, was the martial arts. Sure, there were times that I did not want to go to class and practice (just me being lazy,) but I actually did have an overall sense of interest in the hobby/sport/way of life. In my mind, even though there were kids that far exceeded my athleticism in the sport, I was able to learn and study those skills at my own pace- without sitting on the bench or being picked last. Starting with my mom and kid brother when I was eight was probably one of the turning points in my life. Even though I had little to no drive to exercise or eat right in those early years, I gained an increasing love for the skills on the training room floor. Almost 18 years have passed, and I now co-own my own martial arts academy (New Edge Martial Arts, LLC,) alongside my mom.
I fullheartedly believe that the years I have spent practicing Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Hap Ki Do, and other artforms have helped develop me into the man I am today... and I can say with honesty as well as amazement that I am in better shape now as an almost 26 year old than I ever have been. I enjoy being able to push myself by means of exercise--- I find it a fun, healthy way to not only release stress but just gain a better understanding of who I am and what I aspire to become. It has been years since I have had fast food, and I try to eat as healthy as possible- I also have never given into pressure when it comes to smoking, or drugs... and drinking just doesn't do it for me. As far as the confidence level is concerned- owning a school/teaching has developed my people-to-people skills immensely- I like myself and like meeting new individuals. I'm not sure if I could say the same thing if it weren't for the martial arts and the discipline I have developed due to training.
It is my goal to share at least a fraction of these habits with my students- young and old. Children are open to a great many different opinions from peers, adults, and the environment as a whole- I feel that martial arts and exercise in general are great alternatives that can help develop oneself for years to come. Coming from someone who used to be self-conscious, overweight, and unmotivated... it has done wonders for me. As far as adults--- the comradery that can be found in such activities is far worth the price of admission. I have made countless friendships over the years through my training, and it is a joy to witness my adult students experience the same thing. These training partners can push one another to continue their pursuit of a healthy lifestlye... proper exercise, eating right, self confidence, etc. A few of my current students/friends have actually motivated me into running several miles at a time early Sunday mornings. I enjoy the work out and would never have thought of doing such a thing if I had not met them. It is a great way to start the day, and it makes me smile to know that I have done so much in just a few hours after waking up.
For me, my motivation to be active, happy, and healthy... and share it with others is a combination of my faith, friends, students, martial arts, exercise, and experiences... it is all encompassing and goes hand in hand, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Update on this past Friday's tests...
I am proud to say that all of my students did a phenominal job- (all passed their exams,) and the later test was honestly one of the best performances I have seen in my years teaching/training in the arts.
Great job to all participants! :)

A good week for New Edge Martial Arts
First of all, I would like to just shout out some praise to the Man upstairs... This past year has been rough on my mom (who is also my business partner.) She has had a number of all-too-numbing surgeries that have just lowered her spirits. Last week, however, she was cleared by her doctors to be able to exercise again and participate in the martial arts.
I am pretty happy for her, as she seems to be gleaming with confidence. It also helps in that we have another head instructor on the mat to teach our students. :)
We have also signed up a number of students this week- which is great, since the last part of October/beginning of November at times may seem like an off time for new people to come in.
There will be a test this Friday (tomorrow,) for several students... some testing for yellow belt... and others testing all the way up to deputy black belt! It is refreshing to see so many martial artists stick to their goals and enjoy the learning process.
As far as black belts are concerned- I could not be happier- My first group of adult black belts are now pretty comfortable with their current patterns and techniques--- and they have also, from what I have witnessed, grown so much in terms of being able to help out newer students. All of this has just really helped me recognize that the school is doing well- that I do love my job- and that others enjoy the exercise and experience they are partaking in.

The menus are both easy to navigate as well as beautiful. Music accompanies each menu.

Michigan Cup Tournament 2009
I had one student test and successfully become promoted to 1st poom junior black belt, as well as five adults pretest for their different black belt ranks. :) They all did very well.
Also, the 2009 Michigan Cup tournament for Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do was held in Kalamazoo- New Edge Martial Arts represented with 25 competing students--- which I believe was the biggest, if not one of the biggest schools as far as turnout :)
All of my students did a phenominal job and had a great deal of fun. I had the job of being a referree and judge for the event- but did get to watch as well as judge some of my students.
On an interesting note, a few people recognized me by face/name and mentioned how they love and appreciate my DVDs- Tang Soo Do: A Visual Guide to Forms, and Tae Kwon Do: A Visual Guide to Forms. I was pretty flattered at the thought

KICKPICS Photo Shoot

On Saturday, September 12th, New Edge Martial Arts had the wonderful opportunity to have a photo shoot... taken by Stace Sanchez of KICKPICS.NET
Let me just say that it was an incredible experience for all of my students, as well as my mom (Master Cindie,) and I.
The students had a lot of fun posing with various stances, kicks, jumping techniques, and even weapons- they loved it! Stace is very talented, and made sure that each person had equal posing time and were comfortable.
He also devoted over an hour of his time taking pictures of me for my personal use in websites, videos, advertising, etc... it was just great all-around. I would recommend his photography business to anyone. (he also does portfolio shots, senior pictures, etc.)
For more information on KICKPICS, visit http://www.kickpics.net
Also- please check out my new youtube video that highlights my favorite poses, kicks, and techniques from the shoot.

sweet energy boosts
This week definately shows that August is a good month for martial arts business and energy!
(for those wondering, the picture is of my friend Jeff and I from years ago just being goofy with boxing gloves.)
I have had SO MANY phone calls of people that are interested in classes- young and old alike! During the summer we may get a few calls a week- but this week we have consistently been getting a good 4-8 calls from prospective students.
Monday night I was teaching the adult class at 8pm- doing a very basic but extremely fun boxing class- and a couple came into the school and got information since they were just so excited with what they watched from the windows outside.
Tonight I have at least five or six new people coming to try out self defense class!!!
Several of my students that were on vacation for the summer have started to come back to training within the last week... all great for my teaching energy, as well as seeing friendly faces! :)
-----------
As I was sitting here typing this tidbit of info, a guy maybe a few years older than me knocked on my door to let me know that he trains in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Hawaii. He gave me a nice bow and a handshake and let me know how cool it was to see a fellow martial artist as he walked down the street- awesome!
Last of all, I am driving to Kalamazoo on Saturday morning for a black belt meeting and to go over changes for referee skills- I get to see both of my instructors, so that is always a plus.
Fun times indeed!

DVDs and Film-
Just an update on my happenings over the past year or so- I am branching out into film and media.
I currently have two DVDs for sale-
Tae Kwon Do: A Visual Guide to Forms - featuring Taegeuk 1-8, Koryo, Keumgang, Taebaek, and Pyongwon
Tang Soo Do: A Visual Guide to Forms - featuring Kicho Hyung 1-4, Pyung Ahn 1-5, Bassai, Naihanchi 1-3, Sip Soo, Chin Do, Kong Sang Koon, and Ro Hai
Both DVDs showcase the respective patterns in either Demonstrational or Slow Speed selections, and most forms have selectable viewing angles. Also, each DVD has 12 bonus Moo Sool Do patterns created by my Grand Master, James Sun Hwan Chung, that are specifically for his students or anyone desiring to try something new.
they are available at:

Also, I recently was cast and filmed as an extra for the Michigan movie, 'Revenge of the Black Eagle,' that is still in production. I was a bodyguard in all black dress clothes during a fight scene in a bar. I may also be used for other fight scenes in the movie.
I will keep you updated on more news as it happens :)

New Edge Annual Picnic and St. Jude's Kick-A-Thon!!!!
The spring rolls, hot dogs, and brownies were my favorites this year. Mr. Jeff was stark raving mad about these vegetarian all natural chips.. haha.
Ok. Even though Master Cindie and I announced that there would be no water balloons this time around, someone managed to sneak some in and start the madness! It was all in good fun, though, as the kids really enjoyed themselves (and so did some of the adults ;)! ) One of our adult female students jokingly stated that even if the kids didn't have water balloons, they would find a way to soak eachother via plastic cups and what-not. So true!
We also had our 2nd annual kick-a-thon for St. Jude's Cancer Research at the picnic. I believe we had over 50 participants, which is a big improvement over last year. The parents got to hold targets for their respective children for three minutes of non-stop kicking as part of the event. The participants either recieved donations on a per-kick basis, or pledged a lump sum for such a good cause. I am very proud of the turnout.
I also plan on posting pictures of the occasion in the near future.
peace!

SDTCO... Book Information
We plan on having it published for general public sale.
I am currently working on chapter three, which will deal with in-close 'phone booth fighting' defenses for arm and leg strikes.
It will also cover laws concerning the use of force, stances, street-applicable strikes, and escapes for standing/wall/ground grabs, among other techniques.
I will post updates as soon as they become available.
